We are proud to congratulate our colleague Stian Borg-Stoveland on successfully defending his PhD last week.

The title of the thesis: "Marine Microalgae Cultivation for Effluent Treatment and Nutrient Recovery – Linking Microalgal Growth, Nutrient Recovery, and Bacterial Growth Dynamics". The full thesis is available on the Norwegian Research Information Repository (NVA).

Stian has been an integral part of EcoFishCircle since 2022, delivering his industrial PhD in close collaboration with the University of Agder. His research has focused on creating valuable use of effluent and sustainable solutions for land-based aquaculture, particularly through the use of microalgae for nutrient recovery and water treatment in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Furthermore, he also mapped — for the first time — the bacterial dynamics within the production tank and effluent outlet throughout a full grow-out cycle of Atlantic salmon.

Throughout his PhD journey, Stian has combined strong scientific expertise with a practical, industry-focused approach. His work contributes directly to strengthening circularity, improving water quality, and unlocking new value streams in aquaculture.

Stian has been with us for a while and will also continue his journey with EcoFishCircle, bringing with him valuable insight, competence, and innovation power into our ongoing technology development. His contributions will play an important role as we continue to build sustainable and efficient solutions for the future of aquaculture.

Congratulations, Stian — we look forward to what comes next!
